HARRISON — Annual town meeting voters unanimously passed a $6.4 million budget Wednesday night.

A total of 53 voters turned out at the Harrison Elementary School for the 30-minute session during which the 25-article warrant was swiftly passed.

Town Manager George “Bud” Finch, said the 2013-14 budget is $223,142, or 3.6 percent, more than this year’s $6.2 million. education and county taxes account for 83 percent of the increase, Finch said.

Voters approved articles to raise $309,681 for the county tax and $3,735,110 for education.

Voters also appropriated $675,078 from revenues to reduce property taxes and to earmark any excess funds for unexpected and deferred maintenance projects.

They also approved raising and appropriating $471,041 for administration; $514,866 for Public Works Department; $104,031 for the Fire Department, $320,231 for solid waste disposal and operation of the transfer station, $167,741 for Parks and Recreation, $171,322 for public safety, $350,000 for road work, $150,000 for the Comprehensive Capital and Reserve Fund, and $79,920 for community programs.

Finch said, “We are prepared for whatever Augusta does.”

Lawmakers hope to pass the state spending plan by June 19, and the budget must go into effect by July 1 to avert a state government shutdown. Many towns and cities across the state have been approving their local budgets with an eye toward major cuts in state revenues if Gov. Paul LePage’s proposed budget is enacted.
