LEWISTON — A group hoping to resurrect and relocate Kennedy Park’s gazebo will get another year, councilors decided Tuesday.

City Administrator Ed Barrett said Wednesday councilors voted 4-2 to give the group until June 2014 to come up with the money it needs to build a new gazebo at the park’s eastern entrance, near the intersection of Bates and Walnut streets, and to move the roof from the current gazebo.

“There was a pretty clear message from the council that this is pretty much it,” Barrett said. “Let’s see if we can get it done or not, and then we’ll decide a year from now.”

The gazebo has been closed and fenced off since 2010 due to safety concerns, including damage to the concrete floor of the structure, erosion on the brick supports and wear on the wooden columns and the wood structure under the roof.

“They have spent a lot of time working with a contractor to refine how much funding they’ll need and what must be done,” Barrett said. “They believe they have a pretty good final design and are pretty involved in their fundraising efforts.”

Early estimates place the cost of the work at $260,000.

Councilors agreed last fall to spend $64,500 in Community Development Block Grant money to upgrade the park’s public furniture and to do other work at the park. Plans call for replacing 21 lights and putting in covered trash cans and new benches.
