ROXBURY — The Roxbury ATV Riders Club will be hosting a night ride starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Roxbury park-and-ride and ending at Silver Lake Campground to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
President Michael Worthley said that this is the fourth year that the Roxbury ATV Riders Club has attempted to raise money for different programs.
“One year, we had a guy who set up a movie theater on the trails,” Worthley said. “Another year, we had a hot dog roast on the trails. We try to do something different all the time, with all donations going towards helping different groups.”
The registration fee for the Saturday night ride will be $5, with all proceeds going to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
“Cancer affects everyone in one way or another, but it really affects us when it hits our children,” Worthley said. “We’ve heard quite a few stories recently about children with cancer. It just seemed like the right time to raise money for the children’s cancer program. We even have a couple of children who are fighting cancer now that are going on the night ride with us.”
Worthley said that the night ride will be approximately 30 miles and will end with a bonfire at Silver Lake Campground, where hot dogs will be cooked and raffle prizes will be drawn. A 50/50 will also be held, with tickets $1 each, or 6 for $5.
“One of our members hand-carved an ATV out of wood,” Worthley said. “We’ll be raffling that off, along with some other items yet to be determined. We’ll play it by ear.”
Worthley added that if people who don’t ride ATVs want to attend the bonfire and donate money, they’re welcome to show up at Silver Lake Campground and participate.
“We already have 100 people who have confirmed they’re participating,” Worthley said, “but if you don’t feel like riding the trails, by all means, show up at the campground, donate a little money and have some hot dogs with us.”
