NORWAY — Voters at Thursday’s special town meeting will be asked to take money from the surplus account to maintain current Town Office hours.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Town Office on Danforth Street. There are six articles on the warrant.

At the annual town meeting last week, voters approved spending $207,764 more than selectmen recommended and $166,566 more than the Budget Committee advised. The action restored a full-time position in the Police Department, a full-time position in the Highway Department and created a full-time fire chief position, but failed to restore Town Office hours.

Selectmen agreed last week that another $14,000 should be added to the budget to keep from reducing Town Office hours and to restore stipends to the Board of Selectmen and possibly some of the $5,000 that Town Manager David Holt took from his pay to help soften the other cuts.

If voters OK the move, the $14,000 will come from the surplus account and would not affect taxes, Holt said.

“I looked at what we will be returning to surplus at the end of the year and felt comfortable recommending this,” he said.
