PARIS — The majority of voters at Monday’s special town meeting OK’d increasing the town’s legal spending limit.
The 22-15 vote approved overriding Maine’s LD1 law that limits the growth of taxes and appropriations made by state, county, and municipal governments, and school administrative units.
Town Manager Amy Bernard said the action was necessary primarily because of the loss of $422,000 the town chose to apply to offset taxes last year.
The town also received about $100,000 less in state revenues for fiscal 2014 but voters spent more than $85,000 above their levy limit at annual town meeting earlier this month. Most of the $85,000 was earmarked toward the care of town roads.
The special town meeting warrant contained the one revenue article.
