HARRISON — The next scheduled tour of the Scribner’s sawmill and Homestead will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 20.
The 1847 sawmill housed an up-and-down sash saw to cut dimension lumber, and machinery to manufacture clapboards, shingles and lathe, all the materials needed to construct a house at the time. At the turn of the 20th century Scribner’s Mill also manufactured barrels for the local apple industry, then turned to making ammunition boxes for the war effort during WWII.
The mill continues to make barrels and shingles while the restoration of the site continues. On request, visitors can put together a barrel as well as watch the shingle mill turn out shingles which are used on the ell of the mill.
The homestead, built in 1849, was the home for five generations of the Scribner family and is interpreted as it appeared in the 1920s when it was remodeled and electricity, generated at the mill, was installed. Tours through the homestead are like stepping back in time. Children frequently ask, where’s the TV?
The barn holds a large collection of antique mill equipment. Behind the barn is the ice house which is full of tools used in harvesting ice off the Crooked River
This site has been found to be the last remaining mid-19th century rural, family-owned industry to manufacture wood products that is still intact in the U.S. when water power fueled the economy in Maine.
On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4, Scribner’s Mill will hold their annual Back to the Past celebration of old sawmill and homestead activities.
The event will include many exhibitors, the mill turning out barrels, tours of the 1849 Scribner Homestead and great food at the food booth.
The Autoneers car club will join the festivities on Aug. 3. Twenty cars have signed up for the tour, all of which are 1914 and older, representing the “Brass Era” of automotive history.
The cars will range from a 1909 Model T Ford, 1908 Buick, 1910 Rambler, 1910 Hupmobile and a Stanley Steamer driving on its own power from Woodstock, Vt. for the weekend. Participants have been encouraged to dress in costume for the day. The touring autos expect to arrive around 11 a.m. to tour the mill and events of the day. Visitors are welcome to come see the cars and ask questions of the owners.
Scribner’s Mill is one mile south of Bolsters Mills on Jesse Mill Road just over the bridge in Harrison. Entrance is free; however, donations are welcomed and used for the continued restoration of the site. For more information or to schedule a private tour, call 583-MILL (6455).
