WILTON — A Gardiner man, apparently staying in Wilton, was arrested Tuesday morning on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender, Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox said.

Wilton officer Andrew Hardy arrested Robert Merandes, 33, after “neighbors on Union Street brought it our attention that he was staying there,” she said.

Police responded to an unrelated complaint on him from the neighborhood. Sgt. Chad Abbott investigated previous charges and found Merandes had not registered even though he was apparently staying in Wilton, she said.

Last month, Wilton police unexpectedly arrested Merandes when they learned he was wanted in Kennebec County for failing to appear in court on sexual assault charges.

Wilton Officer Brad Timberlake checked the license plate on a vehicle parked at the Wilton home and found it belonged to Merandes, who indicated he was just visiting at that time, Wilcox said.

On average, nearly 20 registered sex offenders live in Wilton, which police keep an eye on, she said.

Merandes was bailed from Franklin County Detention Center on Tuesday on $100 cash bail and is expected in court on Aug. 14, according to a jail officer.
