MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library is inviting the Chewonki Foundation of Wiscasset to visit next week to teach children how different animals adapt to new environments.
The presentation is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, for ages 2 to 14.
The Chewonki Foundation, a nonprofit environmental education group, will teach children how certain animals thrive in specific habitats, according to library Director Valeria Messana.
“We had the Chewonki Foundation visit last year, and they brought owls with them,” Messana said. “I’m not sure what they’re bringing this year.”
Messana said the animals the group brings are usually those “that cannot be released into the wild for one reason or another,” whether it’s “because they’re rescued or injured.
“They don’t let the kids touch the animals either,” Messana said. “It’s not a touching-type thing. It’s more of an educational program.”
Children will also be able to put on costumes and will be encouraged to create their own animal, along with the types of adaptations that their invented animals would use.
The event is a part of the library’s Terrific Tuesdays program, where guests give presentations on different topics. Messana said this year’s theme is “Where the Wild Things Are.”
She said area school teachers Brenda Sassi and Michelle Ladd will host a storytelling event with children Aug. 13.
On Monday, Aug. 19, the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers from Bar Harbor will host a puppet show.
