SOUTH PARIS — Firefighters and police faced off on the softball field at Gouin Field to help a local charity Sunday.

In the seventh annual charity softball tournament, local and state police took on a combined firefighter team from Hebron, Paris, Bridgton, Norway and Paris.

According to Norway fire Chief Dennis Yates, this is only the second year the firefighters won, soundly defeating the police team 21-9.

“Tonight the loser got pies to the face,” Yates said, making victory all the sweeter for the firefighter squad.

Besides fundraising at the gate, several local businesses donated prizes for raffles with a grand prize of $250 cash.

Prizes were donated by Golden Mountain Outfitters, Bath and Body Works, Smiling Moose, Arbonne and Agren Appliance. A total is not yet available for the money raised.

A home run derby and events for kids between innings kept the afternoon lively.

Proceeds from the game went to REACH, the Rape Education and Crisis Hotline, of South Paris.
