LEWISTON — Ward 6 residents will go the Lewiston Regional Tech Center’s Green Ladle Restaurant to cast their ballots this November, councilors agreed Tuesday.
The City Council voted 6-0 to move the polling place from the Elks Lodge to the culinary school this fall. The building is located at 156 East Ave. on the Lewiston High School campus.
Voters go to the polls Nov. 5 for the general election.
City Clerk Kathy Montejo said the move gives the city more flexibility and more parking for voters. The Ward 6 polling place was the only one in the city that was located in a privatly owned building for the past few years.
“We didn’t want to infringe on private buildings any more,” she said. “And also, you never really know for sure that a building is available. If there is a scheduling conflict, we may be stuck. It seems logical to have all the voting done in all the city-controlled buildings and places we can manage better.”
Montejo said she has met with the school officials to discuss the plan and parking.
“They have a dedicated lot and they said they’d even allow additional parking,” she said. “The school was extremely supportive and may try to introduce an educational component with their students as part of the voting.”
