PERU — Members of the Peru Committee for Honest Government were told Monday night that selectmen share their concerns on various town issues and are handling the most important ones first.

Chairman Jim Pulsifer reminded committee member Warren Oldham and several others that four of the five board members had only been in office three months.

Committee members, including Martha Witherell and Dawna Kazregis, were particularly upset that selectmen had not addressed questions about the Recreation Committee finances that were raised two years ago.

Pulsifer said the board will address them in September.

Outside the Town Office after the meeting, Oldham told Pulsifer, “I may not be able to make you do anything, but I sure can make you wish you had. That’s my way. Before I am finished you will wish you had.”

In other business at Monday’s meeting, selectmen accepted an offer from Cianbro Irby to repair Gammon and Ridge roads that were damaged during construction of the Central Maine Power transmission line. The cost is estimated at $8,847.50.

Selectmen awarded the contract for winter sand to Knox Loam and Gravel of Rumford for $18,000.

Last year’s supplier, R.A. Tibbetts Trucking of Wilton, bid $16,980. However it was rejected after Oldham complained there were too many oversized rocks in it and questioned whether the amount agreed upon was delivered.

Selectman Larry Snowman said he found 2- to 2½-inch rocks in his yard after his road was sanded last winter.

The specifications require the sand to be processed through a ½-inch screen.

Road Commissioner Joe Roach said he thought either bidder was acceptable. He and selectmen said they believe Tibbetts delivered the quantity of sand specified.

Also Monday, the board agreed with Selectman Danny Wing that a town revaluation is needed. The board will ask voters to take $40,000 from the Revaluation Reserve Account and the rest from surplus.

The next board meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 3, due to Monday being Labor Day.
