DIXFIELD — Selectmen on Monday continued discussions on a possible fireworks ordinance and changing the way residents adopt the municipal budget.

Town Manager Linda Pagels-Wentworth said the board has looked into a possible fireworks ordinance due to a couple of complaints. However, she said the board likely will not take steps to create a town ordinance at this time. She said the town will follow the state regulations unless a petition is presented by residents to set up an ordinance.

The board also decided to explore methods for adopting a municipal budget. The town has traditionally held an annual meeting in May and will continue in 2014.

However, some consideration is being given to calling for more secret ballot votes at the town meeting, changing to a referendum town meeting or some other alternative.

Pagels-Wentworth said the town may survey residents on their preferences.

Also on Monday, the board learned that the $8,000 project to improve Severy Hill is virtually complete. Work began on building up the base of the gravel road during the previous budget cycle. The current project included ditching and installing drainage pipes.

Residents have until Sept. 16 to sign up for monthly payments of property taxes. The program is to improve cash flow for the town and help taxpayers meet payment deadlines.
