WILTON — Sykes Enterprises will give way to the expansion of Barclaycard at the former Nichols Building on the Weld Road.

Sykes, a customer service call center, will leave Wilton by Dec. 1, Dan Hernandez, executive vice president of Skyes Enterprises Inc. based in Tampa, Fla., said Wednesday.

Sykes’ intentions were revealed just a week after Gov. Paul LePage and Barclays officials announced an expansion of its credit card customer contact facility in Wilton. The expansion included 200 more jobs at the site at 128 Weld Road, shared by Sykes and Barclay, the former G.H. Bass corporate office building.

“Given the expansion of Barclays’ business in the building we shared, Sykes will be consolidating business into other U.S. operations,” Hernandez said.

Local Sykes employees have a couple potential options, according to Hernandez.

“Sykes employees at the site did receive notice of layoff and are invited to pursue opportunities with Sykes Home, as well as opportunities that emerge with Barclays’ expansion,” he said.

Hernandez did not have specific numbers of employees affected by the Sykes move.

Inquiries to Barclaycard about its intentions to hire Sykes employees were directed back to Hernandez by Kevin Sullivan of Barclaycard.

Sykes Home is a program that allows employees to work from home, he said. More information is available at jobs.alpineaccess.com/work-home/work-home-overview/

Originally the ICT Group, headquartered in Newton, Pa., opened the telemarketing service on the Weld Road in Wilton in early 1999 with an intent to provide support for insurance and financial clients.

Providing similar services, Sykes merged with ICT in 2010. Sykes provides customer service through mostly inbound calls or online for clients, a company representative said at that time.

Sykes Enterprises maintains more than 50,000 employees in 24 countries and 80-plus call centers providing a variety of services for clients, she said.

Barclays expanded to Wilton in 2008, opening with about 70 employees and plans to add 25 more by the end of that year.

Workers at Barclaycard in Wilton provide customer service for partners who offer credit cards, a company representative said then. The center provides customer service for problems with credit cards, including those lost or stolen.

Barclays said last week that there will be 250 employees by the end of the year and another 100 new jobs are expected to be added in 2014. The jobs are full-time and include benefits such as health and dental insurance.

Applicants are visiting the Wilton Career Center daily to pursue opportunities with Barclays, Patty Ladd, manager of the Western Maine Community Action career services, said.

They can apply either by visiting Barclays on the Weld Road and asking for an application or coming to the Career Center in East Wilton, she said.
