PARIS — A granite bench in memory of a West Paris teen who was killed in a car accident last year will be installed at the high school field hockey field later this fall.
Rebecca Lynn Mason, who was killed when a vehicle crashed on Route 219 in West Paris in January 2012, would have been entering her senior year at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School this fall, said Cindy Goddard, the school’s field hockey coach.
Logan Dam, 19, a former Oxford Hills high school student from West Paris, was also killed in the crash.
On Tuesday, school board members approved Goddard’s plan to install a memorial bench dedicated to Mason at the Gouin Athletic Complex on Alpine Street in South Paris.
“I wanted something that was going to be long lasting, and I thought a bench would be nice because it invites you to sit and reflect,” Goddard said. “This is something that could be here, in her memory, a long time,” she said.
Goddard coached Mason when she played field hockey for the school and recalled that the team was one of the groups she had a strong connection with.
The bench will be supplied by David Pratt of Bolster Monumental Works in Oxford, Goddard said in a memo to the school board. Pratt’s daughter also plays field hockey.
She said senior girls on the team designed the bench and were currently raising money to support a $250 donation from the Mason family to buy the bench.
The team plans to hold a ceremony when the bench is installed, hopefully sometime in October, Goddard said.
