BRUNSWICK (AP) — A stretch of track between Freeport and Brunswick has been selected as a test site for a new high-tech railroad trespassing deterrence system.

The Maine Department of Transportation learned it will receive a grant from the Federal Rail Administration to pay for the system, which includes remote sensors, wireless video cameras and other gadgetry intended to keep people off dangerous sections of track.

Department spokesman Ted Talbot told The Times Record (http://bit.ly/16b8nZ3 ) the test will run for three years.

Digital cameras will be linked directly to a public address system, allowing the police department to tell the trespasser in real time to get off the tracks.

Brunswick Town Councilor John Perreault said he favored a lower-technology approach — fences and warning signs — but is fine with the experiment.
