BUCKFIELD — The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday night to accept a bid of $79,800 from Port City Architecture of Portland for services related to construction of the $1.2 million fire and rescue building.

Town Clerk Cindy Dunn, acting on behalf of Town Manager Dana Lee, who was absent, told the board the firm is the only one that submitted a bid.

Selectman Martha Catevenis said the town must be careful not to get in the position of acting as the general contractor because it’s a dangerous road to travel.

In other business, the board scheduled a special town meeting for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, to vote on accepting a Community Development Block grant for St. Andre Home, which wants to buy a home in town for pregnant and homeless women.

At that meeting, voters will be asked to accept the upper floor of Municipal Building back RSU 10, so the fire and rescue service can move into the space while the new station is being built. The board will sign the warrant at its Oct. 1 meeting.

The board awarded the screened winter sand bid to Maynard & Sons Trucking of Sumner for $9 a yard.

The board voted to designate Lee as a representative to the Maine Municipal Association and Selectman Warren Wright as an alternate voting member.

The town took a 45-acre land-locked parcel off the old railroad bed for back taxes owed and now must decide what to do with it. Dunn said it would grow cranberries.

The board voted to table the issue.

Catevenis said the situation is a reminder that the board needs to be aware of what it’s getting before taking land for nonpayment of taxes. There is a great deal of debris to be cleaned up on the property as well, she said.
