PARIS — Selectmen intend to meet with members of the town’s Road Committee to review the 11-year road improvement plan approved by voters last year.

The plan outlines road projects to be completed every year until 2022. It was designed as a comprehensive way to address the poor condition of many of the town’s roads and streets.

The plan calls for the town to spend between $386,000 and $521,000 a year on road projects. Most years fall in the $450,000-$480,000 range.

When the plan was adopted, Road Committee members and selectmen said it could be modified year to year to conform to budget constraints.

Some, however, have questioned the priority of the improvement projects.

Ryerson Hill Road resident Forrie Everett has asked the Board of Selectmen at two separate meetings why his road, which is in extremely poor condition, is not meant to be reclaimed and repaved until 2015, while other streets that have fewer people living on them and less traffic are scheduled to be worked on earlier.

Town Manager Amy Bernard, who was hired by the town after the road plan was approved, agreed that the plan may need some review.

She said that she would also like to bring forward some other, potentially less expensive alternative products to paving asphalt for the committee’s consideration.

Selectmen Chairman Bob Kirchherr said selectmen wanted to meet with the members of the former Road Committee to go over the plan and see what progress has been made and what changes might be needed.

“I think it’s just a chance for them to take a look at the progress and comment on where we’re going and make sure we’re still on target,” he said.

Although the selectmen voted last year to maintain the Road Committee as an ad hoc advisory body, Kirchherr said selectmen never took action to give a charge to the standing committee.

“The intention was to do it, but we didn’t actually go through the process of doing it,” Kirchherr said.

The board intends to discuss the committee’s future role as a body to provide advice and oversight. Selectmen will also inquire if former members want to commit to continuing their involvement in the process, Kirchherr said.

Reviewing the road plan will also recognize the efforts of members of the defunct committee and allow them to provide input before the board makes any changes.

“I think it would be a good idea to have the people who did the original work to take another look at this and hear the ideas and review the good things they’ve done,” he said.

“They put a lot of hard work into the plan, and it would be nice for them to see all the results of that hard work.”

Robert Jewell, the former Road Committee chairman, and other committee members have been contacted, but no date for a meeting has been set, Kirchherr said.
