NEW GLOUCESTER — Crews from several towns made quick work of a barn fire Thursday night at the former fairground on Bald Hill Road.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause. No damage estimate was available late Thursday.
New Gloucester fire crews went out at about 7 p.m. for a report of a barn engulfed in flames. Shortly before 8 p.m., the fire was said to have been knocked down. Fire crews remained at the scene, snuffing out hot spots and beginning a search for a cause.
No injuries were reported.
Deputy fire Chief Roger Levasseur said the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to assist with the investigation. The barn had been used to store recreational equipment, he said.
Roughly 40 firefighters and New Gloucester Rescue responded to the call. Gray’s ladder truck proved valuable in helping quell the blaze, Levasseur said. Towns responding also included Auburn, Pownal and Poland.
According to the town of New Gloucester website, the fairground is 31 acres of open space with a half mile dirt track. It was once used for horse racing.
Historically, the building was home to trotters and pacers of several owners. The site was popular as the New Gloucester Danville Fairgrounds at the beginning of the 20th century.
The building and land, known as Trotters Park, was sold a decade ago to New Gloucester.
The track offers safe walking opportunities to the community and the inner field is popular for sports, namely soccer and softball. The annual town Community Fair was held at the site last month.
