BETHEL — The Oxford County Democrats held their Sept. 8 meeting at the Crescent Park School beginning with a potluck supper and social time.

Cathy Newell, chair of the committee, welcomed attendees from Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Bethel, Greenwood, Norway, Paris, Woodstock and Oxford.

Roy Gedat presented an update on the treasury reporting that the annual barbecue held at the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center exceeded goals both in terms of attendance and fundraising. Gedat reported that the Annual Fund appeal also met its goal in the spring.

The committee was active throughout the summer with parade presence and booths at West Paris Old Home Days, Hiram and Rumford on July 4th, Bethel’s Mollyockett Day, Lovell Old Home Days, Andover Old Home Days and the Dixfield Outdoor Market. Planned participation in the Buckfield Community Day was rained out. More than 25 Oxford County Democrats attended the Michaud for Governor Announcement event in Lewiston.

The Democratic State Convention will be held on May 30-31. The following slots on the Convention Committees were filled by the Oxford County Committee: Permanent Organization, Eileen Broderick of Bethel; Credentials, India Baker of Bethel; and Platform, Jimmy McHugh of Mexico, Barbara Arsenault of Rumford and Larry Engdahl of Bethel.

The following regional point people have been named to secure caucus convenors for the various towns in their regions, work on regional caucus locations if that is the desire of the local towns and serve as contact people for the Michaud campaign, U.S. Senate and CD 2 campaigns: River Valley, John Patrick, Barbara Arsenault, Jimmy McHugh; Oxford Hills, Roy Gedat and others to be recruited; Southern Oxford, Cathy Newell and others to be recruited; Bethel area, Mike Broderick; Buckfield area, to be recruited. Colin O’Neill volunteered to take on the webmaster duties for the redesigned web site.

Events throughout the county were discussed with the Fryeburg Fair being the next major project. Events will be listed on the Facebook page. Staffing for the Fryeburg Fair booth is underway, and parade participants are also being sought. Contact Cathy Newell at [email protected] or 875-2116.

The next meeting will be held in combination with an event in Southern Oxford County in mid to late October.
