Rumford has always had a strong community spirit, quick to rally around those who are in need. This is evident in the new support for the Greater Rumford Community Center and for Black Mountain of Maine, and in myriad fundraisers for those who become sick.

There are individuals and groups who work tirelessly and quietly to make this town a better place, who create new events to enliven the town, who tend the Adopt-A-Spots with seasonal plants and flowers, who volunteer to help our elderly and our children. And they keep on doing, no matter. To these people, I give my thanks.

But I am saddened by the current discord happening in Rumford.

There are many good people, all with good intentions, who are now in hostile and bitter conflict. Nastiness and threats have replaced kindness and compassion. Blame has replaced discussion.

Politics has become a malevolent air which is poisoning every citizen.
