Mayor Macdonald has been railing once again against citizens who receive Section 8 funding to help with their rent payments.

Assuming they are all dirty bums who ruin the city for everyone, he pledges to persevere in his efforts to drive them from Lewiston until none remain.

Unfortunately, it seems the mayor has forgotten that many senior citizens must rely upon Section 8 to afford their rents, as must responsible working families, disabled veterans and others.

Mayor Macdonald defends his “outspoken nature,” saying he speaks for many in Lewiston and says things others are afraid to say, but I think he is just a bully who makes sweeping assumptions and relishes his leadership position, which he feels gives him license to voice his own long-held frustrations and prejudices.

A real leader would attack problems, not people, and would work for the good of all, not a narrow group.

Lewiston desperately needs real leadership to capitalize upon the wonderful opportunities for revitalization and economic improvement that have been created through the vision and hard work of individuals and groups from many walks of life.

I believe Lewiston voters will reject bullying and give us a leader in the next election.

Pat Malcolm, Lewiston
