LEWISTON — The widely used tennis courts next to Lewiston High School have been renovated as part of the Franklin Pasture Sports Complex Project and are being touted for their new look. The City of Lewiston and Lewiston School Department enabled the renovations to become a reality.
Anita Murphy, Lewiston Recreation’s Director of Youth & Adult Tennis, is seeking participants for a Franklin Pasture Tennis Fundraiser that will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 and 13, starting at 8 a.m. The fee to participate is $10 per person.
Murphy notes, “This fundraiser will give participants an opportunity to use the new facilities, have a good time and raise funds for continued tennis court amenities that will be a tremendous asset to our community.”
For the October fundraiser, USTA rules will apply. Play will include 10 minute warm-ups and serves two out of three sets, with a 12-point tie-breaker at six-all. All proceeds will benefit further tennis court renovations, namely the restrooms, wind screens and the bleachers. Divisions will be doubles, women’s, men’s and mixed.
Interested players may register at the Lewiston Recreation Department, 65 Central Ave., from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Inquiries may be directed there at 513-3005; TTY/TDD 513-3007 or to Murphy at 783-3250.
Champions of the complex project note that the complex will put Lewiston on the map for championship level facilities and competitions, providing growing opportunities for Lewiston’s children. The complex will be an investment with far-reaching impact to vast recreation and school activities, as well as the City of Lewiston as a whole. The Franklin Pasture Complex fundraising campaign goal is $5 million. The value of the tennis court renovations is $105,840.
LHS Athletic Director Jason Fuller said, “We are excited about the new tennis courts and now look forward to the anticipated new restrooms, wind screens and bleachers. We’ve made considerable tennis court progress so far, and we look forward to continued improvements.”
