PARIS — A man accused of punching a Norway police officer in the face earlier this year pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge in Oxford County Superior Court on Wednesday.
David W. Phillips, 52, of Norway, was arrested at the Cumberland Farms store on Main Street in Norway on May 9 after he punched Norway Officer Ron Cole in the face and was subdued by police officers with a Taser.
On Wednesday, Phillips pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and was ordered to pay $300 in fines and $200 in restitution to the Norway Police Department. The charge was reduced from a felony assault on an officer. Other charges, including refusing to submit to arrest and criminal mischief, were dropped.
According to a report by Norway officer Jefferey Campbell, Phillips resisted officers after they confronted him about being at the convenience store despite a criminal trespass notice barring him from the property.
Officers received multiple confirmations from dispatch that the trespass order was still in effect, but learned it had expired in February after Phillips was already subdued and in the back of a squad car.
