WINTHROP — A local man was killed Thursday morning, and two others were injured in a collision that shut down Route 202 for nearly four hours, according to police.

Richard St. Laurent, 80, of Winthrop was apparently trying to make a left turn from Route 202 onto Royal Street when his van was rear-ended by Jeffrey Ray, 44, of Scarborough, Winthrop police Chief Joe Young said.

Ray was operating a Mitsubishi box truck owned by Pure-Sata Technologies of Lewiston, according to Young. Both vehicles were headed east, and St. Laurent’s vehicle was stopped before it was struck.

The collision, which occurred shortly before 9 a.m., sent St. Laurent’s vehicle careening into a guardrail, the police chief said. Neither St. Laurent nor his wife were wearing seat belts.

St. Laurent was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ray and St. Laurent’s wife, Patricia St. Laurent, 74, were both transported by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Young said. The severity of their injuries were unknown at this time.

Police rerouted traffic onto Main Street before Route 202 reopened early Thursday afternoon, Young said.

Young said its too early in the investigation to speculate whether Richard St. Laurent would have survived had he been wearing his seat belt. It’s also unknown if speed was a factor.
