LIVERMORE — A fire that damaged a house at 642 Federal Road on Monday night was caused by a power surge when electricity was restored to the building, fire Chief Don Castonguay said Tuesday.
Michael Gammon is the owner of the home.
The power in that area of town had been out since Sunday and was restored early Monday evening.
A state fire investigator determined that the power surge caused cardboard around an older-style light fixture in an upstairs bedroom to catch fire. It dropped into a tote of plastic items that caught fire and burned a hole in the floor, Castonguay said.
The bedroom had to be dismantled to extinguish the fire, he said.
There was smoke and water damage but firefighters were able to save the house, he said.
