LISBON — A Lisbon Falls teenager was killed when the car he was driving left Main Street and struck a tree broadside early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash, police said.
Andrew N. Chapman, 16, of Faith Street died shortly before 5 p.m. at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Police said excessive speed was a contributing factor.
Three passengers in the car suffered serious injuries, police said.
Chapman lost control of the 2000 Pontiac four-door sedan he was driving south on Main Street. It crossed the centerline and went over the bank on the left side of the road before hitting a tree near 152 Main St. in Lisbon Falls at about 5 a.m., police Chief David Brooks said.
Chapman was pinned in the car and had to be extricated by Fire Department personnel.
He was first taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston before being transported to Portland.
A passenger in the front seat, Michael D. Coffin, 16, of Deerfoot Lane, Topsham, also was cut from the car and taken to CMMC in Lewiston where he underwent surgery, police said.
Two rear-seat passengers, Judith Hursh, 15, and Alyssa Bourdreau, 18, both of 98 Main St., Lisbon Falls, were able to exit the car on their own before emergency workers arrived. Both were taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. Hursh was treated for broken bones. Both were later released.
An accident reconstructionist from Lewiston Police Department assisted Lisbon Police with the investigation.
