FRYEBURG — A New Hampshire man faces multiple felony charges related to the theft of a credit card and other valuables from a Fryeburg home last month.

Police arrested Darren Lee Drew, 27, of Albany, N.H., on Tuesday after questioning him about the theft at the Police Department, according to Fryeburg Police Sgt. Joshua Potvin. Drew faces burglary, forgery and multiple theft charges in the case.

Drew is accused of using a spare key to enter the home of Shawn and Melinda Smith in early November and taking a credit card and other items, including a motorcycle.

The Smiths are part-time Fryeburg residents and were out of town at the time, Potvin said.

Over a month, $800 in purchases were made with the card in multiple locations in Maine and New Hampshire, Potvin said. Gasoline was the most common purchase, but there were several larger, but still unidentified charges from a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Conway, N.H., according to Potvin.

The theft was reported to police after the couple noticed suspicious charges on their credit card bill. Police believe Drew was known to the couple and had performed summer maintenance at their house.

Police identified Drew from surveillance videos taken at the same time the card was used to make purchases at different locations, Potvin said.

The motorcycle has not been recovered, Potvin said.

Other law enforcement agencies including the Bridgton and Conway, N.H., police departments and New Hampshire State Police are involved in the case, he said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Drew was still being held on a $5,000 cash bail at the Oxford County Jail in South Paris.
