JAY — Spruce Mountain Ski Slope will open two of its trails the day after Christmas.

“Things are looking good as far as snow conditions,” Rick Couture, president of the Spruce Mountain Ski Club, said Wednesday.

The natural snow and the man-made snow have created a base so that the Bunny and the Barn trails can open, he said.

They are now working on the Junior Trail.

As of Wednesday, club members had done about 40 hours of snowmaking, he said. The club can run five snow guns very efficiently, and they are hoping to get a couple more efficient guns, he said.

The ski area is going into the season in better conditions than it has had in a while, he said.

They still need more snow to be able to open the remainder of the 11 trails, he said. There are also cross-country skiing trails.

“We’ve had a groomer donated to us,” Couture said, by an unidentified individual.

“It’s a good backup,” he said. It is the same make as the groomer the club already has and has similar parts.

“It is an excellent machine for us,” he said.

The mountain and buildings are owned by Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls. The club owns all the equipment and operates the ski area. The slope has three tow ropes to get up the trails.

The lodge also offers $1 grilled cheese sandwiches.

Whenever the mountain has a 10-hour ski day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., there will be half-day tickets available for skiers and snowboarders for $10 each, Couture said.

Couture’s son, Max Couture, again will be a co-manager this year. The club is still looking for a second co-manager, Couture said.
