Mechanic Falls Postmaster Michael D. Wolfe is asking customers to help keep letter carriers safe by clearing ice and snow from around sidewalks, stairways and curbsides.

“Letter carriers who attempt to deliver the mail to mailboxes that have not been cleared of snow and ice, or who walk on driveways and paths covered with snow to deliver the mail. have been seriously injured,” Wolfe said today in a news release. “One in particular suffered a broken wrist which required multiple surgeries, and in some other towns carriers have suffered more serious injuries.”

Wolfe said carriers are instructed to hold mail to addresses where ice and snow is not cleared, but many risk their safety in order to provide service to customers.

Wolfe advises customers to clear snow from curbside boxes so mail trucks can approach the box and drive away without the added danger of backing up.

Walkways should be cleared of snow and ice, and stairs also should be kept clear and in good repair. He added that mail may be held if there are no handrails for stairways with more than three stairs.

“Please consider the safety of those mail carriers delivering to or visiting your home, and help us provide the best service possible.” Wolfe said.
