FARMINGTON — Plans for the popular Hollywood-themed Heat Dance are underway to raise funds for heating oil for local residents.

The dance will take place on Feb. 7, starting at 7 p.m., in the North Dining Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington.

One of the best-attended and most-anticipated community events of the year, the dance has, over the last two years, received broad support from individuals, service organizations, local businesses and churches, according to organizers.

Last year, it raised a record $16,000 and was attended by close to 300 people. The money raised provides one 50-gallon fuel delivery per heating season to hundreds of Franklin County families who otherwise might run out.

“I think it’s especially fitting that this announcement takes place against a backdrop of record cold throughout New England,” said Susan Crane, one of the organizers.

“The dance will help our neighbors who are struggling to keep warm during this brutal winter, while at the same time will provide the opportunity for others to see friends and enjoy what has always been an awesome night out,” Crane said. “As usual, we will provide free hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, very affordable baby-sitting and the opportunity to dress like a Hollywood star, if you want. There’ll be live music from one of the best dance bands in the area, Shepherd’s Pie.”

Among the new twists this year is a special pre-dance dinner at the Homestead Restaurant that features red carpet limousine service from the restaurant to the dance and back.

Tickets prices have been reduced to $10 in advance and are available at The Calico Patch and Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers. They will be $15 at the door.
