A Naples man is charged with operating under the influence and eluding police following a chase through that town Monday night.
A Portland Press Herald story said Daniel Lajoie, 62, was involved in a chase that ended with Lajoie abandoning his vehicle and hiding in a vestibule of a shopping plaza.
According to the article, a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy had followed Lajoie as he left a Naples restaurant at 10:40 p.m. According to the officer, Lajoie was in a 25 mph zone when he accelerated to 67 mph through downtown Naples.
Lajoie’s car swerved onto Route 35 before turning into the nearby shopping plaza. Abandoning his vehicle in the parking lot, Lajoie ran to a store vestibule where he tried to hide behind a wooden pillar, the newspaper reported.
Lajoie was charged with criminal operating under the influence with a prior conviction, refusal to submit to arrest or detention, criminal speeding more than 35 mph over the speed limit, eluding an officer and drug possession.
He is a former Auburn police lieutenant. He left the department in 1995.
