DIXFIELD — A local man was flown to a Lewiston hospital Thursday night after a snowmobile crash on a trail near Coburn Avenue.
Investigators said the 47-year-old Rumford-area man suffered hip and other injuries when he lost control of his machine shortly before 8 p.m. On Friday morning, warden service Cpl. John MacDonald identified the man as Thomas Averill of Mexico.
“He was riding with a couple of friends,” said Josh Smith of the Maine Warden Service. “He failed to negotiate a curve and he left the trail.”
Smith said Averill was thrown from his machine, suffering a possible fractured pelvis and internal injuries. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
None of the other riders were involved in the crash, Smith said.
Dixfield police and game wardens were investigating the crash as Averill was being taken by LifeFlight from Rumford Hospital to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
