WATERFORD — Firefighters from several towns went to 849 Valley Road early Wednesday night when a house was reported to be engulfed by flames.

Waterford crews went to the scene at about 5 p.m. A short time later, they were joined by firefighters from Harrison and Bridgton. The entire house already was engulfed when crews arrived and flames had spread to at least one out building, a witness said.

The fire scene is a short distance down Valley Road from the Post Office and from Melby’s Market. A section of Valley Road, which is Route 35, was shut down as emergency crews responded.

It was not immediately clear how many people lived in the house, but early reports were that occupants of the house escaped without injury.

Crews were still at the scene at 8:30 p.m., according to a fire official at the station. It was believed the blaze was under control.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and an investigation into the cause was expected to get underway immediately.
