MACHIAS, Maine (AP) — Folks in Down East Maine are getting ready for some downright wintry weather.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a winter storm watch, and even a blizzard watch, for eastern Maine.

Meteorologist Ken Wallingford says the state’s extreme eastern tip could see up to a foot of snow and gusts of 40 to 45 mph on Wednesday. He says a blizzard watch is in effect for southern and central Washington County.

Forecasters say Maine’s coast will get a glancing blow while inland areas should escape the impact of a powerful storm. Forecasters say the center of the storm, to the south of Maine, could see hurricane force winds.
