FARMINGTON — A Farmington jogger struck by a pickup truck Sunday morning was listed in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on Monday afternoon.

Tess Perry, 25, was jogging along the Fairbanks Road in the vicinity of Partridge Lane around 9:09 a.m. Sunday, according to Farmington police Sgt. Edward Hastings IV.

Colin Gallagher, 25, of Brunswick was on his way to Rangeley when he lost control of his 2002 Dodge pickup truck on the slushy road. He went off the road into a snowbank, striking Perry, Hastings said.

“Perry is quite the athlete, quite the person,” Kelley Cullenberg, cross country coach at Mt. Blue High School, said Monday. “Love her to pieces. She’s a great girl.”

Cullenberg coached Perry while she was a student at Mt. Blue. Perry was a sprinter, predominantly the 100 and 200, and specialized in the long jump and triple jump, Cullenberg said. She was a three-time All State runner while at Mt. Blue. She set two records at Mt. Blue that have not been broken, Cullenberg said.

Perry went on to the University of Maine from 2006 to 2009, where she was a sprinter.

Although Cullenberg encouraged her to try running longer distances, Perry didn’t seem to want to, Cullenberg said. The coach at UMaine did get her to try the longer distances. She joined the cross country team, although she usually played soccer in the fall, Cullenberg added.

Perry came back to Farmington and was a volunteer coach at Mt. Blue, working with sprinters and jumpers, Cullenberg said.

“She’s great with kids,” Cullenberg added.

She graduated magna cum laude from University of Maine at Farmington in 2010 with a degree in community health. She worked as a research intern at the Maine Center for Public Health in Augusta, according to an online listing on UMF Sports.

Perry is  now pursuing her teaching certificate in health education at UMF.

Perry works at the Fitness Center, where she teaches yoga, Cullenberg said. She is also an assistant coach of cross country at UMF.

She joined the staff as an assistant coach, working with coach Joe Staples, in August 2013 and worked through the fall season, Peter Lefresne, UMF sports information director, said.

She’s not under contract but regarded as staff, he said. The door is open to her returning next fall if she can fit it in around her student teaching, he said.

Perry worked with men and women cross-country runners, he said. The men finished fifth out of 10 teams in the conference championship meet. The women finished fifth out of nine teams in the conference championship, he said.

Perry is also a member of the Running Leaders, a local women’s running group, Cullenberg said.

She is the daughter of Kate and Scott Perry of Farmington, she said.
