WEST PARIS — A toll booth to raise money for Relay for Life, a cancer charity and awareness event, will be set up near the Agnes Gray School, after selectmen OK’d the proposal at their meeting March 27.
The organizers of the toll both, Christine Gammon and Linda Carey, also applied to hold a toll booth in South Paris, but were turned down earlier this month. The West Paris event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
West Paris Selectman Wade Rainey said he had been harassed at charity toll booths in other towns and wanted to make sure the event’s organizers are respectful to drivers.
Cary said she expected to have 10 people manning the toll both, in shifts of four. They intend to put up signs for drivers ahead of the booth to let them know what it is for and will not be asking people for money, Cary said.
The toll booth will be stationed near Agnes Gray School on Main Street. Selectmen asked that it be positioned in such a way that drivers who do not want to participate can bypass the booth by taking a side street.
The Paris Board of Selectmen turned down a toll booth request from the group at the recommendation of the chief of police, who cited safety concerns with having untrained pedestrians standing in traffic.
