WEST PARIS — A discussion about the town’s fire hydrants and other fire safety issues scheduled for Thursday night’s selectmen meeting will be postponed until later this month.

The meeting was intended to bring together representatives of the West Paris Water District, Fire Department and selectmen to address concerns raised by West Paris Fire Chief Norm St. Pierre last month.

On Wednesday afternoon, Town Manager John White said Water District representatives were unable to make the meeting due to a prior commitment.

Selectmen are expected to address the issue at their meeting on April 24, when all parties are able to attend, White said.

In particular, St. Pierre highlighted issues he has had with the hydrants, owned by the Water District, primarily that the fixtures have not been maintained and are unreliable.

In an interview earlier this week, Water District Director Greg Inman denied there were any problems with the hydrants, but acknowledged the quasi-public corporation does not keep maintenance records and is not required to.

St. Pierre, in a three-page resignation letter sent to selectmen last month, also complained that the Fire Department is not receiving adequate support from town officials in terms of funding repairs to the fire station, replacing a department firetruck and pressing to renumber houses on some streets to reduce confusion in responding to emergencies.

St. Pierre later withdrew his resignation as fire chief.
