BUCKFIELD — Selectmen on Tuesday approved a contract for H.E. Callahan Construction Co. of Auburn to demolish the old fire-rescue station for up to $1,125. There will be an overseer on site at all times.
Last year, voters approved spending $1.2 million to build an 80- by 100-foot station next to the Municipal Building on Route 117. It will replace the 60-year-old station.
The design calls for an 8,000-square-foot station, including seven vehicle bays, as well as rooms for offices, bunks, training, storage and a kitchen. Emergency vehicles will still enter and exit the building onto Main Street.
Also Tuesday, selectmen approved May 1 as Silver Star Day in recognition of all wounded and ill military veterans in town.
Town Manager Cindy Dunn told selectmen that in 2008 their predecessors voted for the proclamation, which she read. It said Silver Star Families of America has freely given thousands of Silver Star banners to the wounded and their families. The purpose is for people to remember the sacrifice of those in the armed forces.
In other business, the Budget Committee bylaws were approved as amended.
Chairman Warren Wright announced a hearing by the Buckfield Withdrawal Committee at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Municipal Building. Residents are requested to tell the committee what they want for a school system, should the town vote to withdraw from RSU 10.
Selectmen voted to meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, then meet with the Budget Committee at 9:30 a.m. After that, selectmen will have a brief meeting to possibly act on the budget.
