AUBURN — Fire heavily damaged a large home Sunday afternoon on the Stevens Mill Road.
At 2:33 p.m., crews from Auburn, Lewiston, Minot and Mechanic Falls and Poland were called out to 425 Stevens Mill Road to fight the structure fire.
Smoke and flames were visible through the roof of the house as the first crews arrived.
According to Battalion Chief Don Flanagan, the fire started on the outside porch, climbing the siding before setting in the attic and roof. The attic proved most difficult, Flanagan said, due to it’s difficult position for firefighting operations.
The 20-year-old, two-family structure owned by Gilbert Pinard was occupied at the time of the fire according to Flanagan. Pinard, his wife and another relative staying in an in-law apartment were treated at the scene and released by emergency medical services.
Flanagan said a firefighter suffered a minor injury in the blaze that took about 30 minutes to knock down and another couple of hours to overhaul — locating and extinguishing hot spots.
According to Flanagan, the Pinards are insured and could not say whether the house was a total loss, citing extensive smoke and water damage in the second floor and basement.
Firefighters were able to salvage some of the home’s contents, Flanagan said, placing tarps over some belongings to prevent further water damage.
The Red Cross and what Flanagan called, “a good network of family and friends,” were on scene to help the Pinards.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined and Flanagan said the State Fire Marshal will be investigating. Looking at the extensive damage of the home, he said, “stuff can be replaced.”
