RUMFORD — The townwide spring cleanup starts Monday, April 28, and ends Friday, May 9, and is free to residents.
All items must be placed behind the curb by 6 a.m. April 28, for residents from Holyoke Avenue to Falmouth Street, Swain Road, Isthmus Road, Highland Park, Swift River Park and the Virginia neighborhood, according to a notice on the town website.
For residents in the Smith Crossing neighborhood, South Rumford, Rumford Center, Rumford Point, Rumford Corner and North Rumford, all items must be put behind the curb by 6 a.m. Monday, May 5.
Public Works crews will not make return runs. Additionally, the department will only pick up items from occupied residential properties.
No more than one pickup truck load of items will be taken from each residence.
Items to be picked up and kept separated by type are:
* Metal and metal appliances with a maximum of one refrigerator or one air conditioner per household.
* Bulky furniture: Mattresses, rugs, window glass, doors or similar items.
* Televisions and computer monitors.
* Wood: All wood must be cleaned from any roofing, flooring or plaster. The maximum length is 4 feet. Pressure-treated wood and railroad ties must be separated from plain wood.
* Brush: Brush and vines smaller than an inch in diameter must be tied in bundles. Larger brush with a maximum diameter of 6 inches or more at the butt end will be chipped. Place it with the butt end near the road.
* Tires: There is a limit of four tires per household. Only passenger car tires will be picked up.
Crews will not pick up the following items: refrigerators with doors attached, vehicles, car batteries, commercial truck tires, skidder tires, propane cylinders, rocks, bricks, concrete, chemicals, paint, cardboard, firewood, tree stumps or parts of demolished buildings.
Propane cylinders, rocks, bricks and firewood can be taken to the Mexico transfer station, the notice stated.
If possible, residents are encouraged to bring items to the transfer station during the cleanup. There is no charge for disposal of items during this time, according to the notice. A current dump sticker is required on one’s vehicle and is available at the town manager’s office in the Municipal Building at 145 Congress St.
