RICHMOND, Va. — Joey Logano’s ascent to NASCAR Sprint Cup stardom continues.

The 23-year-old from Connecticut went from fourth to first in the space of less than a mile, five laps from the finish Saturday night, and stormed ahead to the win in the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

It is Logano’s second win in the past three races and the fourth of his career, one that began with promise and took a detour when he was replaced by Matt Kenseth at Joe Gibbs Racing in 2013.

Logano passed Kenseth for the win, after driving underneath a second-place battle betweem Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski moments earlier.

Gordon and Kenseth entered the night one-two in the Sprint Cup standings, but Logano’s late-race heroics denied them each of them a win that would have secured their place in the chase for the championship later this season.

Past series champions Gordon and Keselowski combined to lead 287 of the 400 laps. Logano, who also won at Texas Motor Speedway earlier in April, was in front for 46.

Gordon finished second, followed by Kyle Busch, Keselowski and Kenseth.

A.J. Allmendinger, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr. completed the top 10.

There were five lead changes over the final 100 laps, the first when Earnhardt Jr. took over the top spot on a pit stop sequence.

Logano drove around Earnhardt Jr. on lap 306, but Gordon ran him down to grab the advantage on lap 337.

Gordon’s margin grew to nearly seconds before Kenseth charged to the front for the first time all night at lap 361.

Kenseth and his crew won the race off pit road after Jimmie Johnson’s flat tire brought out the seventh caution of the night.

Additional yellows for a spin by Denny Hamlin and J.J. Yeley’s eliminated huge chunks of the remaining laps.

But when Kenseth, Gordon and Keselowski battled hard after the restart, Logano zeroed in and took advantage.
