OXFORD — A member of the town Rescue Department is challenging a two-term incumbent for a seat on the Board of Selectmen in the June 10 elections.

Town Clerk Ellen Morrison said George Gardner and Roger Jackson turned in nomination papers with the required number of signatures to get on the ballot. Monday was the deadline to file papers.

William Frye, a long-term Oxford Water District trustee, is running for re-election. David Dunn is seeking election to the Oxford Hills School Board. The seat is now held by Henry Jackson. Both races are uncontested.

Roger Jackson, is a state legislator, Army veteran, retired mail carrier and independent farmer. He has been on the board for the past seven years.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, Jackson said he wanted to maintain continuity on the board and see some of the town’s projects, especially its $22 million sewer system, come to fruition.

“Born and raised in the community, I never thought I’d see what I’m seeing today,” Jackson said. He was talking about the sewer project and the new businesses and jobs he expects it will bring to the town.

Jackson said he would like to see businesses, particularly manufacturing companies, expand in the community and he also wants to keep property taxes low.

The 74 year-old Republican is also running for a second two-year term in the Maine House of Representatives. His district covers Oxford, Mechanic Falls and Otisfield. Jackson said he believed his dual roles as selectman and legislator were “complimentary.”

Gardner is a member of Oxford Rescue. A message left for him at the Oxford Public Safety Station was not returned Tuesday afternoon.
