A Windham man pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to passing counterfeit traveler’s checks at stores and restaurants in Maine and Massachusetts, including two stores in Portland.
Keith A. Coleman, 48, entered his plea in U.S. District Court in Portland.
Coleman passed $18,000 worth of bogus $100 American Express treveler’s checks between Dec. 17 and Jan. 10, according to court records, Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Clark wrote in a news release.
The checks were presented at Best Buy and Rite Aid in Auburn, as well as at Applebee’s, CVS Caremark, Denny’s, TGI Fridays, Longhorn Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Radio Shack, Ruby Tuesday, Staples, Target and Toys ‘R Us elsewhere in Maine and Massachusetts, according to U.S. District Court records.
Coleman faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250 fine, or both. His sentencing will take place after a presentencing investigation report has been completed by the U.S. Probation Office.
Investigating the case were the Auburn Police Department, the U.S. Secret Service and police departments in Augusta, Biddeford, South Portland and Topsham. The Everett, Massachusetts, Police Department also helped in the investigation.
