PARIS — Police Chief Michael Madden said Monday that an arrest in the hit-and-run death of 16-year-old Xavier Fuentes of Turner probably will not happen “in the immediate future.“
“I expect it will probably take a while now,” Madden said.
Fuentes’ body was found by a passing motorist on an unlit stretch of Route 117 in Paris sometime before 8:30 p.m. on March 15. He had attended a movie at Flagship Cinema in Oxford with family members earlier in the evening but left and began walking to his grandparents’ home in Turner when he was hit, police said.
On Friday, Madden said two suspects were identified — one from Auburn and the second from the Auburn-Lewiston area. Both were under surveillance and were not considered flight risks.
Police also confiscated evidence at the apartment of the Auburn suspect and seized a car from Lewiston and a Hertz rent-a car at a Bangor car rental agency.
Madden said the evidence is now being analyzed by a forensics lab and the “suspects are not cooperating.”
Officers from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Maine State Police, Lewiston and Auburn police departments and Oxford County Sheriff’s Office have assisted the Paris Police Department in its six-week investigation.
A $2,500 reward is being offered for any information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved in the hit-and-run.
