LEWISTON — Kelly Carter of Lisbon was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Carter, 50, pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 12, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

According to court records, on Sept. 18, 2013, Carter, who was on probation for a 2007 sexual abuse in the first degree conviction in Kentucky, was found in possession of a loaded .38-caliber special revolver and a pistol when his supervising Maine probation officer searched his Lisbon home.

Carter, formerly of Madison, Indiana, also has felony convictions in Indiana in 2001 and 2004.

U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Torresen said she imposed the maximum statutory sentence of 10 years because she believed Carter was a danger to the community, particularly to the women with whom he shares personal relationships.

The investigation was conducted by the Maine Department of Corrections (Probation and Parole), the Lewiston and Lisbon police departments, the Central Maine Violent Crime Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
