ORONO — University of Maine senior cross country and men’s track and field standout Kelton Cullenberg of Chesterville has been named Maine’s nominee for America East Man of the Year.

Cullenberg is a kinesiology/exercise science major with a business administration minor.

Cullenberg has captained three University of Maine teams. He has been named Maine Athlete of the Week and America East Athletic of the Week multiple times during his career. Cullenberg has been selected to All-Conference teams in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.

At the 2013 America East Cross Country Championships, he finished second overall. At the 2013 Northeast Region meet, he was selected to the All-Region team where he qualified for the NCAA Championships. Cullenberg was the first Maine male runner to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championship since 1979. His personal best in the 3,000-meters is 8:24 and he is second on the University’s all-time list, running the 5,000-meters in 14:25. He finished second at the 2014 America East Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter run.

Cullenberg placed second in the highly-competitive Penn Relays last month in the 5,000 with a time of 14:25.06. In addition, he was the America East Title last week in the 5,000 with a time of 14:29.42.

Cullenberg won the 2014 M Club Dean Smith Award, presented annually to the top male and female student-athlete at Maine. Cullenberg has been named to the Dean’s List six times and has posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average four times. He has been awarded the Presidential Scholar Award four times and has been named to the America East All-Academic Team in three different sports. He has been named to the America East Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll numerous times. In 2013, he received the College of Education Dean’s Award and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. At the 2014 Scholar-Athlete Award recognition, he received a gold medallion as a three-time scholar-athlete.

To be nominated, student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2014 spring season or received their undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2014 term and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.500 (4.000 scale).

The nominees will be narrowed down to three finalists on Tuesday, May 20 via a release on the conference web site with the America East Man of the Year being announced at the conference’s Annual Meeting in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire on Tuesday, June 3.

Bates swept; Sanborn gets career win No. 600

LEWISTON — St. Joseph’s College of Maine baseball took a 5-1 win in Game 1 and rallied for three runs in the seventh and final inning of an 8-7 Game 2 victory over Bates College in a doubleheader at Leahey Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (19-19) held a 6-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh of the second game before the Monks (27-13) posted three runs in the frame and held the hosts to one in the last half of the inning. St. Joseph’s used a three-run fifth en route to the win in the seven-inning first game.

With the sweep, St. Joseph’s head coach Will Sanborn picked up his 600th career win with the Monks. Sanborn, in his 22nd season with the team, now owns a 600-321-5 all-time record at St. Joseph’s.
