FARMINGTON — The Board of Selectmen tabled a discussion on landscaping the former town garage lot located between High Street and the Farmington Falls Road during their meeting Tuesday.
A previous proposal by Nancy Porter to lease the property for a summer flea market has been withdrawn, Town Manager Richard Davis told the board Tuesday.
Richard Bjorn has volunteered to make a donation toward sprucing up the lot, Davis said.
Conservation Commission member Robert Zundel, a landscape architect, has offered to draw some ideas for the lot.
Some have suggested covered picnic tables as a place for visitors to stop as they come in to Farmington on Route 2, Davis said. That would involve maintenance, and there is potential for the lot to become a hangout, he added.
Another idea is a low-key walking area with parking, although the location does not lend itself to walking, he said.
After visiting the lot, Zundel and Davis realized some pine trees should be removed, along with underbrush.
There is electricity on the lot, so trees could be illuminated at night. Improvements should be made to the town sign, including adding the town website address, he said.
One thought is to remove the banner poles that allow groups to advertise upcoming events. The town already has a message area at Philbrick Park in Farmington Falls and a message board at the bridge in West Farmington, he said. They are a lot of work to maintain, he added.
Board members discussed possible difficulties for drivers as they pull in from either High Street or the Farmington Falls Road (Route 2).
The board decided to wait to see the drawings of the proposed lot improvements.
Selectmen Chairman Ryan Morgan wanted to think about a couple of possible ideas before sending them to Davis via email. He also wanted time for townspeople to voice their ideas to selectmen and the town manager.
