BUCKFIELD — Selectmen voted Tuesday night to ask the owner of Captain Bly’s Tavern and abutting property owners to come up with solutions to noise complaints at the Route 117 establishment.

The board also asked Town Manager Cindy Dunn to check with the Maine Municipal Association on what selectmen can do to enforce laws regarding excessive noise.

Paula Sullivan asked selectmen Tuesday to consider requiring a noise barrier be built between her property and the tavern. Several options were discussed, including planting trees. However, it was determined tavern owner Mark McAlister doesn’t own the property; he leases it.

Sullivan said the noise was only an issue when the tavern doors are open.

Selectman Martha Catevenis said the law says that when food is served, doors must be closed for health reasons.

McAlister said he was aware of the law, but people prop the doors open.

Catevenis said, as manager of the establishment, McAlister could put a stop to that practice.

McAlister said the highest level of noise is during Friday night karaoke and he could stop karaoke night completely.

In other business, the town meeting warrant was signed after taking out Article 43, which asked voters to amend the Amusement Ordinance.

Selectmen scheduled a hearing on amendments to the entrance/driveway for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3.

The 2014-15 proposed municipal budget of $3.15 million budget was signed. Dunn said the amount, if approved, would result in a 50-cent increase in the tax rate, or $15.20 more on a house valued at $100,000.

Dunn said the debt account now includes the proposal to borrow an additional $160,000 for the Fire-Rescue station construction project.

The board voted to ask for written documentation from the Office of the State Fire Marshal that a sprinkler system wasn’t needed in the station.

The board also accepted with regret the resignation of Randy Buswell from the Recreation Committee.
