AUBURN — A 73-year-old Norway man was injured when his rifle exploded Saturday afternoon at the Androscoggin Fish and Game Club, 476 Perkins Ridge Road.
Auburn police Lt. Anthony Harrington said police believed David Day was firing his .223-caliber rifle at about 2 p.m. when it broke and a round exploded in the chamber, injuring his left hand.
“It appeared to be something incidental with the weapon, nothing reckless on the operator’s part,” Harrington said. “No one else was around. No one else was injured or anything like that.”
A bystander called 911 and police and other emergency personnel responded. Harrington said Day was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
