Fire that caught in an unknown manner caused a loss of over $2,000, early this morning, to a box car in the Lewiston yard of the lower Maine Central railroad, together with its contents, a large number of bales of raw cotton, the property of the Hill Manufacturing Company. The blaze may have caught from spontaneous combustion, or may have been set by someone who was using the car as a lodging. The car was within a few feet of Cedar street and isolated from any buildings and from other cars in the yard. It was necessary to remove the cotton from the car and it took no little time to extinguish the blaze.

Here’s some advice from the inside: Invest in a few safe stocks, pay attention to the rumor mill, and don’t be afraid to take a chance now and then. That’s the word from Kristina Royer, Glenn Tracey and David St. Pierre, three Lewiston High School students who know what they’re talking about. The trio was honored Wednesday at the University of Southern Maine in Portland for finishing in the top one percent of Maine students who competed in a 10-week mock stock competition. The thee students finished 10th out of 534 school teams in Maine, and captured second place out of 99 teams in the Western Maine Class A Division. Enrollment in next fall’s economics course, a one-semester elective at LIIS, has increased by 30 percent.
